645, Whiting was settled in
1856 by five Whiting brothers who came by horse-drawn wagons
from Ohio. The first store was built in 1873. The Main
Street of Whiting, along with some of its residents, appeared in the
Hollywood film "Children of the Corn".
Whiting is located
on K45 just 32 miles south of Sioux City, Iowa and 69 miles north of
Council Bluffs. Whiting is served by MidAmerican Energy for
gas and electric and Long Lines for telecommunications. Union
Pacific Railroad runs directly north and south through Whiting and
parallel with Interstate 29. There are approximately 600 acres
of land designated eligible for the Iowa Enterprise Zone Tax
Incentive Program for the purpose of development and job creation.

Recreational facilities include: Badger Lake Wildlife
Area which is located just off I-29 and is a 987 acre site of an old
oxbow lake with upland and marsh habitat. This is a
popular area for viewing and hunting pheasants and waterfowl.
Lighthouse Marina along the Missouri River offers viewing of an
interpretive panel along the Lewis & Clark Historic Trail and
provides a camping facility and river access.
