Population 3282, The name Onawa was probably taken from the Indian love song in Longfellow's "Hiawatha" and means "awake".  The county seat was incorporated in 1859 and is known for the widest main street in U.S.A. 

Onawa is located just off Interstate 29 on Hwy 175 and is 60 miles from Council Bluffs and 39 miles from Sioux City.  Onawa is served by municipal utilities and Long Lines telecommunications. Union Pacific Railroad runs directly north and south through Onawa.  Approximately 1500 acres of land have been designated as eligible for the Iowa Enterprise Zone Tax Incentive Program for the purpose of development and job creation. 

Attractions include:  The Museum Complex comprised of the Monona County Veteran's Memorial Museum, the Kiwanis Railroad Depot Museum and the Monona County Historical Museum.
