| Population 1416, Mapleton was
originally located on the west side of the Maple River back in 1844.
When the Northwestern Railroad route was established in 1877 on the
east side of the Maple River, the town site was moved there.
By 1896 the settlers had officially named the town of Mapleton for
the beautiful Maple River, which flowed nearby.
Mapleton is located on Hwy 141 & Hwy 175 just 46 miles from
Sioux City, Iowa and 81 miles from Council Bluffs. Mapleton
has approximately 930 acres designated eligible for the Iowa
Enterprise Zone Tax Incentive Program for the purpose of development
and job creation. Mapleton is served by a municipal utilities
and Long Lines Telecommunications. Maple Valley Development
Group offers incentives for small business start up and expansion.
Recreation areas include:
Beaver Run located on E16 east of Mapleton to L37 north and is a
65-acre wildlife management area of beaver dams and native grasses
and wetlands.
Prairie Trail located along Hwy 141 west of Mapleton and runs
along an abandoned railroad right of way. Planted to short
grasses and wildflowers, the two -miles trail begins on the west
side of the Maple River.
Whiting Woods between 140th and 160th Streets offers hiking,
nature studies, and open shelter house.
Gray's Landing on Hwy 175 is a 4.3 acre wildlife management
area with hunting and fishing including access to the Maple River
for boaters and river walkers.
